abstract = {Buildings account for a significant share of global energy consumption, with Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems being responsible for up to 60% of a building’s energy usage. For this purpose, existing scheduling and control solutions can be used to design more sustainable energy systems and limit their environmental impact. However, these approaches mainly consider HVAC, ignoring other energy systems in buildings such as lighting control and plug loads. In addition, these solutions have to be customized for a specific building instance, hindering portability across different application domains. This paper presents a holistic approach for efficiently scheduling smart building energy systems through AI planning methodologies. AI planning enables decoupling domain knowledge from problem representations, enhancing portability and allowing for straightforward runtime adaptation when needed. We evaluate our approach in a smart office setting and show how AI planning enables reducing energy consumption by up to 30%.},

abstract = {Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems account for 40% to 50% of energy usage in commercial buildings. Thus, innovative ways to control and manage HVAC systems while preserving occupants' comfort are required. State-of-the-art solutions employ pervasive systems with sensors or smart devices to gauge individual thermal sensations, yet assessing these methods is challenging. Real-world experiments are expensive, limited in access, and often overlook occupant and regional diversity. To address this, we introduce Co-zyBench, a benchmark tool using a Digital Twin (DT) approach for evaluating personalized thermal comfort systems. It employs a co-simulation middleware interfacing between a DT of the smart building and its HVAC system and another DT representing occupants' dynamic thermal preferences in various spaces. The DTs that support Co-zyBench are generated based on information, including data captured by sensors, of the space in which the thermal comfort system has to be evaluated. Co-zyBench incorporates metrics for energy consumption, thermal comfort, and occupant equality. It also features reference DTs based on standard buildings, HVAC systems, and occupants with diverse thermal preferences.

abstract = {Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems account for a significant portion of energy consumption within buildings. In order to balance the effect of thermal comfort vis-a-vis energy savings, HVAC control strategies have been proposed. However, the strategies are static and do not take into account dynamic changes of consumers, hence creating sub-optimal outcomes. This paper proposes DEMSA, a Digital Twin (DT)-enabled middleware for the self-adaptation of smart buildings. The DEMSA middleware interconnects and coordinates intelligent data exchange be- tween the building edge server, digital twin and Artificial Intelligence (AI) planning nodes in order to invoke appropriate strategies. Moreover, DEMSA is paired with a self-adaptive mechanism that can detect the anomaly of generated planning and adaptively modify it. This process ensures balancing building energy consumption and thermal comfort requirements, without human intervention. The DEMSA middleware is described over a real smart space scenario.

abstract = {With the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), Smart(er) Cities have been a research goal of researchers, businesses and local authorities willing to adopt IoT technologies to improve their services. Among them, Smart Transportation [7,8], the integrated application of modern technologies and management strategies in transportation systems, refers to the adoption of new IoT solutions to improve urban mobility. These technologies aim to provide innovative solutions related to different modes of transport and traffic management and enable users to be better informed and make safer and 'smarter' use of transport networks. This talk presents SmartCityBus, a data-driven intelligent transportation system (ITS) whose main objective is to use online and offline data in order to provide accurate statistics and predictions and improve public transportation services in the short and medium/long term.},

abstract = {This paper presents ComDeX, a context-aware federated architecture and IoT platform for enabling data exchange between IoT-enhanced communities. Today, such smart communities are highly heterogeneous and siloed as they can offer IoT applications and services only to their local community inhabitants. ComDeX uses property graphs to represent smart community entities and automatically maps them to context-aware publish/subscribe messages. Such messages can be discovered and exchanged between communities via a hierarchical federated topology and an advertisement-based mechanism. The ComDeX prototype is implemented using well-known IoT technologies such as MQTT and NGSI-LD. ComDeX is evaluated using a realistic smart port scenario and compared against different federation topologies. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing NGSI-LD solutions in realistic IoT scenarios with synthetically generated workloads, with low impact in larger deployments where the number of hops between brokers of the federation increases.},

However, the inherent diversity and complexity of IoT environments, coupled with the large volume of data, pose significant challenges to achieving interoperability and efficient data exchange. ComDeX [3], is a novel approach designed to meet these challenges. abstract = {This paper presents a model-based approach to facilitate the development of IoT applications in Transportation Systems. Existing public transportation services are provided by relying on standard data models such as GTFS. However, such models are limited in representing IoT-based infrastructures and the locations that IoT devices cover (e.g., bus seating areas). We introduce a context-aware publish/subscribe IoT platform that supports synchronous data requests, asynchronous notifications and analytics applications. Data requests are created using the system’s context, which in our case is based on a transport bus system. Both static and dynamic context properties are modeled by extending the NGSI smart data models. We then introduce a GTFS-to-NGSI mapping tool to enable the enhancement of existing GTFS-based transportation systems with IoT capabilities. We develop a prototype of our platform and we demonstrate the applicability of our approach using open data from the Roma Mobilità bus transportation system.},
